LPI is the world’s first and largest vendor-neutral Linux and open source certification body.

The Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) program is one of these good things for the IT industry, because concentrates on the neutral aspects of a certain technology.

LPIC-2: Certified Linux Engineer (Advanced Level Linux) is the second certification in LPI’s multi-level professional certification program. The LPIC-2 will validate the candidate's ability to administer small to medium–sized mixed networks. The LPIC-2 certification is designed for advanced Linux administrators.

The candidate must have an active LPIC-1 certification to receive LPIC-2 certification, but the LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 exams may be taken in any order.

To become LPIC-1 certified, candidates must be able to perform advanced system administration, including common tasks regarding the Linux kernel, system startup and maintenance; perform advanced Management of block storage and file systems as well as advanced networking and authentication and system security, including firewall and VPN; install and configure fundamental network services, including DHCP, DNS, SSH, Web servers, file servers using FTP, NFS and Samba, email delivery; and supervise assistants and advise management on automation and purchases.

To earn the LPIC-2 certification, candidate must pass both the 201 and 202 exams. Current Version: 4.5 (Exam codes 201-450 and 202-450).

The first exam (201) focuses on topics that are related primarily to "local" services and features. Although these topics are germane to both server and workstation systems, they're considered "local" because they're not related to providing network-based services to other systems. Expect questions that test candidate’s advanced knowledge on the kernel, system startup, devices, and installing software from source.

The second exam (202) focuses exclusively on providing network-based services, with questions on configuring and securing a variety of server software. This includes a variety of web server topics as well as file-sharing services such as Samba, NFS, and FTP. System and network security are also important topics, including authentication techniques, firewalls, and router configuration.

The LPIC-2 exams test advanced Linux administration knowledge, thus, candidate should have at least five years of experience before attempting this certification.
